As most that know me will confirm, I’m a little bit obsessed with photography and in particular the importance it plays not only in our current lives, but also the lives of those following on behind us. I often speak about the responsibility we have to leave a photographic footprint of what life looked like during our time on earth as without our photographs there’s no real proof, history is just subjective story telling.
So it’s with this in mind that I’m creating a personal photography project called “Portraits of Westbourne”. Entirely people based, its aim is to create an interesting, valuable, and ongoing picture of what Westbourne looks like from a human perspective.
Every week I’ll be making portraits of people that have lived here all their life, or that have just moved here, people that run businesses, the rich, the poor, the famous, the not so famous, and everyone in between.
Some of you may be familiar with Brandon Stanton’s “Human’s of New York” project where in 2010 he set out with the goal of photographing 10,000 New Yorker’s on the street, and that soon developed into a worldwide phenomenon. Well POW will take on a similar format, but with a somewhat less ambitious goal.
The easiest way to get involved is to simply send me an email and we can discuss more details. I can photograph you, or those you nominate, at your home, workplace, business premises, or anywhere in Westbourne that’s important to you. I’d like to think I wouldn’t take more than 30 mins to complete everything, but I’m happy to stay longer if the coffee, cake and conversation is flowing.
Shooting begins 6th December, 2018, so please do get in touch if you would be willing to be a part of Portraits of Westbourne. You can of course keep the photographs that we make together.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of working with Abbey, here’s what we did.
I love my job !
In today’s world, both business and personal, we’re surrounded by visuals like never before. Our social media profiles are filled with photographs and videos of our lives, we’re constantly inundated with adverts from brands trying to sell to us, and marketing experts have proven that content with images or videos bring the most conversions and brand loyalty.
The Corporate Head Shot
With online platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and of course our own websites having taken on such an important role in promoting ourselves and our businesses, having an impact-making headshot is more important than ever.
It conveys your professionalism. If you look professional, your potential clients that don’t know you personally are going to be more likely to agree to that first meeting.
A good headshot gives people an idea of your personality before they meet you. A smile portrays approachability. A serious look portrays determination. Make your expression match your personality.
It reminds business contacts who you are if they met you in passing at a conference or business function. This little cue makes it more likely they will accept your “friend” or “follow” request.
A current headshot gives people an idea of what you look like now. Ever met someone whose headshot was taken years ago? I know I have, and there’s an immediate disconnect. It’s not good to surprise people in this way. It sends a message of inauthenticity.
It makes you feel good to look your best. Having a quality image of yourself to share with your professional peers boosts your self confidence, and it can even inspire you to share more of yourself with others.
Choosing to get a professional headshot is choosing to invest in your future. And to be perfectly clear, a headshot is a financial investment as well, but one that will undoubtedly be worth the cost. Thinking beyond the initial investment, if you land that job or secure that project, which leads to a promotion, the professional benefit and ROI will far outweigh what you paid up front. If you look at your headshot as your first introduction, a representation of who you are to potential connections or employers, do you think you’re representing yourself well? If you were on the other side, would you be impressed by you? Take the time to invest in yourself and your future, and I guarantee you will be happy with the results.
If you have questions or want to book a session, shoot me an email. I’d love to talk with you.
….. next time I’ll be looking at the benefits of an environmental portrait for small business owners.
